About

We, Fay and Jan Schlotfeldt, are just two of many who are trying to maintain the history and links of the “Schlotfeldt” families from around the world. We have over 5,000 names in our Familytreemaker file. These date back to the 1500s and 1600s in Germany.

The spellings cover about 6 variations, the most frequent is Schlotfeldt, but we also have “SCHLOTTFELDT” with the 2 “tt”s in the middle. Gustavo Schlottfeldt and his brother Carlos from Brazil have the best sources of that spelling. We then have “SCHLOTFELT” and “SCHLOTFELD”. Our research has chased most of these two branches in America back to our common ancestors in the Klein Flintbek and Kiel area of Schleswig-Holstein province in Northern Germany between the Baltic and the North Sea. The US branch that uses the “feld” spelling mostly comes from ancestors who immigrated in the 1800s and settled in Omaha, Nebraska. The “felt” spelling is largely from brothers who settled in Moline, Illinois and in Western Iowa, near Ida Grove. One brother and his wife (who used the “feldt” spelling) were killed in a tornado. The other brother somehow started using the “lt” spelling and it has gone from there. We are indebted to family researchers from both of those branches for bringing us up to date. We have been able to take those links all the way back to common ancestors. The key to those links came from a cousin in Chile, Carmen Schlotfeldt,  who found us on the web in the 1990s. Her father was able to translate the old family records from their German ancestor who went to Chile in the 1890s. We’ve also linked South Africa and Australian family.

You can see more about “us” by using the link to “Schlotfeldt Family Worldwide” shown on this site. It will tell you more about us and link you to old photos and records. It will also link you to pages that will help you in your own search.

”Schlotfeldts” are all over the USA, Iowa, Illinois, Alaska, Minnesota, Oregon, Washington California, No. Carolina, Indiana, Missouri and Kansas and Washington D.C. and Florida to name a few.

This blog is really intended to provide a place for some give-and-take help in our mutual searches.

If you have a comment or question about the blog or other pages. Jot them down here. If you just want to say HELLO or HALLO, that is great too.

We live in Arizona, USA , but have helpful cousins that can translate your German or Spanish or Portuguese fairly fast if you want to write a note there.

“ Do not worry about the quality of your English. It cannot be as bad as my German or Spanish. If I can’t read it directly, the computer program named “Babelfish” (also linked here on this blog) usually helps me understand the general meaning.”

Our best to you. We hope to hear from you. We will occasionally post notes about folks who have found us, or things we’ve found.

Fay
